This film features one of the most perfectly integrated soundtracks I’ve ever heard. Leonard Cohen’s haunting solo ballads align flawlessly with the film’s tone and atmosphere. Altman’s signature zoom shots immediately establish the spatial relationship between characters and their world. The narrative remains efficient while preserving an unparalleled textural richness, from its cinematography to its emotional depth.

Altman’s audio choices and visual style work together very well. From beginning to end, he constructs an atmosphere of alienation through layered sound design, distinct lighting, fluid long takes, and meticulous editing, emphasizing the tension between individual and environment. The early tracking shots, seamlessly woven together, blur the lines of McCabe’s arrival, capturing the character’s disoriented presence amid the misty, rain-drenched wilderness.

a guided sharing after the screening, which was very well explained, including logic, speaking speed, key points, and jokes, from Bonny Clyde to the filming in western Vancouver, from Rembrandt to the grandmaster. More importantly, I have been away from the Cantonese environment for 15 and a half years, and I still understand it completely.
