War is more than just a backdrop here. The bombing, bridge raids, and final attack on the town are choreographed surprisingly well for the era. The trio of leads is clearly defined, and while the supporting cast may not be as well-written, they still manage to leave an impression.

Though it’s said to be inspired by real events, the film rarely feels grounded. Instead, it leans hard into an absurdist, darkly comic tone. The director’s attempt to inject humor is obvious, yet the dry one-liners fall flat and fail to elevate the story into genuine comedy.

For a film released in 1970, "Kelly’s Heroes" remains a standout war comedy. A ragtag group of soldiers go rogue to steal $16 million in gold, deploying every ounce of firepower they can find. The production is slick, the battle scenes feel real, and the pacing never lags—especially during the town assault, which turns into a suspenseful tank-driven heist. Add in a memorable score, and it’s a classic well worth watching.
