Much better than people give it credit for. Also a lot darker. Leans into melodramatics sometimes, but I think the point it's trying to get across is valid. The word choice has not aged well tho, lol

This doesn't feel simply like a musical, because music and dance are just a front. In truth, the movie delves into themes of growth, downfall, Tony's self-discovery, and the choices he makes. Beyond dancing, he also seeks respect in other facets of life. Moreover, his girlfriend's pursuit of improving her station in life, as well as his friends, all remind me of “Trainspotting", albeit without the same level of cruelty and fantasy.

I would recommend simply editing Travolta's solo dance scene into a short video and sharing that on social media instead. Even the Bee Gees and disco can't overshadow the film's harsh and melancholic coming-of-age story of the lower-class youth. The director did succeed in the group portrayal of the lower-class youth, but unfortunately, the depiction is handled in an uninteresting manner, which ultimately boils down to being the director's problem. The recurring presence of the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge serves as both an attraction and a barrier to the youth, a theme that's clearly and effectively integrated into the script, but it gets overshadowed by numerous pointless dialogues.

9 out of 10. The dancing is absolutely fantastic and its impact is far-reaching. Initially, I thought it would be a mindless flick, but I realized that the music and dance are merely means to an end. The male lead is well fleshed out, with every aspect of his family, friendships, and love thoroughly explored at different levels. Other characters also undergo emotional growth and development as the story progresses. While the dance moves are impressive, the film also portrays the cruelty of youth and the emptiness of reality after all the excitement.

It's not a flawless film, but the timeless music and dance, coupled with John Travolta's compelling performance and moves, are the movie's highlights. However, the movie either skims the surface or abandons all effort to delve into themes of youth, society, and human nature. It's probably best to view it simply as a musical. In most cases, audiences just want to leave the theatre feeling refreshed and satisfied. However, the director seems to have bitten off more than he could chew with this film.

This feels like an adolescent fever dream, depicting the tough realities and challenges of growing up in immigrant families. Disco is probably a dance that can be associated with maturity, which is why the film repeatedly shows the conflict between the protagonist as a 19-year-old and disco. Meanwhile, falling for an older woman, shagging (rape) in the car, abortions, and death—these events all symbolize the transition into the adult world.

The golden age

Saturday Night Fever not only set John Travolta’s artistic career in motion, but also painted a portrait of the unforgettable disco music Golden age.
