I didn’t expect the usually emotional Varda to tell the story of a wandering woman with such restraint, focusing on her freedom. People desire freedom but fear loneliness, leaving them torn between the two, while Mona is pure—she embraces solitude in her quest for freedom. The protagonist serves more as a reference point, allowing the audience to reflect on their own views on freedom.

Varda's approach is always rooted in reality, yet she's best at fiction. This realist masterpiece blends reality with fiction, presenting a documentary-like style that subtly highlights its fictional nature: all the scenes of Mona’s life before her death are fabricated. The people she encounters in reality narrate her story, integrating her into their own narratives. However, the film, through the power of imagination, grants the wandering Mona full autonomy and the right to exist freely.

The movie shows us the vagabondage of a woman before she passes away from different angles. Its cinematography is straightforward and grounded, with plenty of deep-focus shots, non-professional actors, and techniques borrowed from realist films to make everything feel genuine. The way the scenes are framed, with the main character often placed at the edge, really highlights her struggles. Instead of going for a mysterious vibe, the film focuses on portraying everyday life realistically. However, this approach leaves the main character's personality and story feeling a bit incomplete, which is a flaw in the film.

This story is firmly grounded in reality, but Agnès Varda expertly infuses it with a dash of fiction. The result is a resounding masterpiece, thanks to her genius. The "documentary-style" filming in fact exposes the fictional nature of Mona's life depicted in the scenes. The characters, who know Mona in real life, share her story, while the film ultimately liberates Mona with the power of fiction. The story erupts with raw realism as we witness her passing at the end of the film.

She is a wanderer who is always on the move. She'd rather live a short but free life than conform to the dictates of the system. Agnès Varda pieced together fragments of her life through a pseudo-documentary approach and multi-angle interviews, even occasionally downplaying her significance as the main character. We’d never really know about the inner world of the protagonist. She is more like an embodiment of a seeker of pure freedom, someone whom we can't fully empathize with but still admire for her constant questioning and challenging of the hypocrisy in the vast and intertwining system we call society. In the flashbacks, the character often breaks the fourth wall, further reinforcing her alienation from the norm. It's a typical Nouvelle Vague film that provokes reflection and introspection rather than seeking acceptance and identification from the audience. 8.5 out of 10.

Mona walked towards us from the beach completely naked. She was pure at that moment. She took thirteen steps in total, encountering different people with every step, each carrying a different view of her free and aimless wandering. They’re puzzled, envious, sympathetic, or jealous. Mona got corrupted with each step, and the stench from the professor's mouth transformed into purplish mud that covered her. She has nowhere else to go but the freezing pit of her fateful conclusion.

Vagabond (1985)

Pursuit of freedom is a kind of imprisonment, and we all wear shackles.
