In the eerie and cutthroat Chen household, Songlian’s personality gradually distorts as she strives for survival. The old family rules of the Chen family are the true culprits behind the tragic fate of Songlian and the other wives. These women are bound by tradition and are ultimately victims of the feudal system.

Raise the Red Lantern uses red, black, white, and blue across the film. Red, typically a joyous color in China, becomes a symbol of restriction and oppression here. Black represents the dark feudal forces, while white, a pure color, stands for death. Blue symbolizes the cruelty and darkness of the feudal society. The red lanterns, surrounded by deep blue brick walls, reveals how behind all the festive red lies the oppressive feudal expectations that condemns women to tragic fates.

This film is like a masterpiece. The layout is super symmetrical and clean, showing the weight of oppression from the rigid order and hierarchy of feudal society; and the colors really add depth. The movie nails the visual representation of marital power in the old days using lanterns. And it's interesting how the film hints that tragedy will keep coming back, with no sign of spring in the seasons' cycle.

What really shines in this movie is the top-notch craftsmanship in the filmmaking techniques. The cinematographer has a talent for picking the perfect landscapes for still shots. Space is vital in telling the story, like how they capture the empty, square, and symmetrical courtyard in the distance with a long shot. And the sound design is truly impressive. The story has plenty of intriguing elements to mull over, like the power of the landlord and the opera singer's tragic fate of being condemned and sacrificed.

Wow, that's amazing! It's hard to incorporate rituals into everyday life, but Yimou Zhang pulled it off! The movie doesn't even reveal the male lead's face, showing that this is a story spotlighting women. It also mirrors the typical presence of characters like the male lead in real life. The sound effects are super clever and top-notch; the dissolving frames at the end are just unforgettable.
