I started out thinking the film was a story about forbidden love and parting, only to discover it’s actually a tragic tale about the tide of history and the betrayals they bring.

What hit me hardest wasn’t the iconic lines “You can’t live without being crazy” or “I will sing opera for my whole life,” but the tragedy inherent in the tide of history. Artists were forced to betray their own art; in that era, even the freedom to die for your art was stripped away. No one escaped the cruel currents of history.

In 2014 I was in China helping to open a film school there. I felt I needed to brush up on the classics from China and watched this on my laptop in my hotel room alone. This is one of those films that when you see it, you wonder why you never saw it before. It's absolutely heartbreaking. The story of the Opera performers, set to the backdrop of Chinese history through the 20th Century, beautifully captures the cultural tidal wave that engulfed the country. This is a perfect film.
