I watched this movie in film school when the much more sophisticated, worldly, and hilarious classmates told me it was his favourite film. I had never really delved into world cinema before. Not only was this a gateway to that for me, it remains one of my favourite films. Raw and touching, but never without a sense of humour, Wong Kar Wai really put his heart on celluloid with this one.

In the film, urban characters are portrayed as symbols, with no names, only codes, highlighting their insignificance in the concrete jungle. The characters represent the broader urban populace who share similar inner conflicts, loneliness, and displacement, and the various occupations featured reflect that life is full of changes.

As one of Wong Kar-wai’s classics, Chungking Express has garnered immense admiration from audiences and numerous awards. The film narrates two small urban tales, illustrating the delicate relationships within modern city life and presenting an overall sense of restless disconnection and ambiguity. Unique cinematography and outstanding music give the film a distinctive style, heavily imbued with the director’s personal touch and aesthetic preferences.

I still really appreciate Christopher Doyle’s cinematography; he nails the film's vibe. He rarely keeps the camera straight, opting for different angles and even taking daring handheld shots with intentional blur. He and Kar-wai Wong truly push boundaries, and their collaboration is truly impressive. The chemistry between Faye Wong and "California Dreaming" is just captivating, making me feel like I'm watching a music video. I've watched it at least five or six times. Yeah, I was completely hooked. However, I wasn't a fan of the excessive use of memorable lines in the movie, and I don't entirely agree with the opinions of love that this film conveys.

While the story may be simple, the cinematography is absolutely mesmerizing. It highlights a distinct aesthetic appeal that sets it apart from other art forms. Plus, Kar-wai Wong’s knack for casting is truly impressive.

Uff.

Embora a história seja simples, a fotografia é fascinante.

In the Mood for Love.
