Summer with Monika (1953)★ 7.8/10

Where did Harriet Andersson come from, and why wasn't that in my neighbourhood? I was very intrigued by the films of Ingmar Bergman after 'The Seventh Seal' and 'Through A Glass Darkly', but I was not prepared for the freedom and true eroticism of this film and the performance of Ms. Andersson. Two youths enjoy the summer together why dealing with the pressures of upcoming adulthood and their own dreams and ambitions. Perhaps Bergman went further in films like 'Persona' and 'The Hour of the Wolf', but this early take on love and life is a remarkable turn for its era.

"Why do some people have all the luck while others are miserable?" Youth is a beautiful thing, but Monika’s tumultuous romance ultimately succumbs to reality. Human nature, society, and life are never simple, and Monika’s dream eventually shatters.

The film’s standout moment is when Monika, after facing multiple setbacks during her elopement, asks, “...why do some people have all the luck while others are miserable?” This question touches on a unique aspect of human psychology—the persistent belief that good fortune is just around the corner. Monika isn’t a delinquent; she’s simply someone who tenaciously pursues her dreams.
