The beginning of this movie is really different from the ones in the director's other films because it just jumps right into the war stuff. But even though it's serious, the story, characters, and actors still feel very familiar and close to heart. The script is well-written, but Setsuko Hara isn't in it, which is a little bit of a bummer.

When I watch Yasujiro Ozu's movies again, the scenes that stick with me the most are the ones where a bunch of old friends sit around a table, drinking and talking. Sometimes, they say something really deep, but they all seem so real and relatable that I can't help but watch them again. Even though these kinds of scenes are in many of Yasujiro Ozu's movies, I notice something new every time I see them, which makes them always fun to watch.

On the night of his daughter's wedding, Hirayama went to a bar alone to drink. When the owner's wife saw him dressed formally, she asked him, "Where did you come from today? Is it a funeral?" Hirayama thought about it and nodded, "Well, you could say that."
