rewatch in front of big screen in mar del plata festival.when I was in school and thought that emotional photography of The Cranes Are Flying was pretentious, I was really shocked by the fact that the camera in this film ran wildly in the bushes, snow, meadows, and dilapidated houses, and there were even actors who ran and took selfies with the camera on their shoulders. The outdoor locations are basically in the Carpathian Mountains of Ukraine, and the indoor locations are probably Du Fuzhenko's studio. The display of song, dance, and labor customs is also the most awesome

Sergei Parajanov's work in this one is way more accessible than his other movies. But honestly, it didn't quite hit me the way I expected. Back in the day, before all the flashy stuff, the cinematography in this film was just out of this world – it had this intriguing vibe, like a blend of Baroque splendor and those old Dutch countryside Renaissance paintings. But despite how great it looked and sounded, I think the characterisation could've used a little more depth, especially in a movie known for its poetic storytelling.
