The film juxtaposes the picturesque beauty of rural France with the grim desolation of war, creating a stark contrast. It not only condemns the horrors of war but also celebrates the resilience and beauty of human nature. The final scene, where the protagonist walks through a garden path to reunite with her love, moved me deeply. The wait was long, but it was undeniably worth it.

Anti-war films are abundant, yet they never fail to resonate, perhaps because war represents a shared trauma of humanity. While French films often boast visuals as rich and vibrant as oil paintings, their storytelling can sometimes feel exaggerated and frivolous. Personally, I prefer the gravity of British films or the straightforwardness of American cinema.

The director effectively manages both large scenes and intricate details. The film's color tone is also visually appealing, resembling an oil painting. While some mention that the beginning requires patience, as it can be challenging to understand the characters' relationships, I believe a good movie is worth taking the time to appreciate.

I didn't really get how sweet that was, what Manech said to Mathilde, when they first met, and then again when they reunited, until the very end. He is basically saying, I’ve traveled so far to find you, but I don’t feel any pain. Such a simple line, yet it carries so much love and devotion.

O diretor sabe mesclar cenas grandes e detalhes intrincados.
