I don't think that there are any films like ''Bloody Sunday'' that hit us the way a documentary can. And I am thinking more and more of this 2002 film as I think of the Troubles and how these moments erupt again and again in history. In this retelling of Irish history, a peaceful march in 1972 Northern Ireland becomes one of the worst bloodbaths in British history when 13 demonstrators were shot in the back. Paul Greengrass (''United 93'') directs this, and James Nesbitt (''Waking Ned Devine'') plays Ivan Cooper, an MP from Northern Ireland inspired by the actions of the American Civil Rights movement who has far too much faith in his fellow countryman. He is the main figure in this film, and I felt like giving him a hug as the well-told story unfolds and we sit back numb to history.
Watch it and learn what we need to know about our natures so that we cannot fall back to these old actions.
