The Equalizer (2014)★ 7.5/10

Robert McCall, a former CIA agent who leads a quiet life. However, when a young woman is brutally attacked, McCall is forced to come out of retirement and use his skills to bring justice. The film stands out for its frenetic pace, its impeccably choreographed action sequences and Denzel Washington's magnetic performance.

With a style reminiscent of ’90s action films, The Equalizer has a distinct old-school flavor. It’s all about extreme individual heroism, which, while engaging, feels somewhat outdated today. The action scenes are stylishly executed, and Washington’s performance remains compelling, though the script itself lacks originality and excitement.

This is one of the most impressively shot action films I’ve seen, with outstanding music and editing that create a crisp, fast-paced rhythm rarely matched in the genre. Denzel Washington’s portrayal of a highly intelligent and capable protagonist elevates the film, making it a standout that sets a high bar for action cinema.

Way beyond my expectation. It basically raises the bar for movies like this. The thing with these types of movies is they often have too much pointless talking, unnecessary romance, a slow beginning, and a rushed ending. But the director really gets the pacing right, not dragging things out with unnecessary side stories. The pauses and things left out are just perfect. More action, less cheap talks. It's totally cool that there's no big boss battle.

I'd give it a perfect score! This action movie has some of the best fight scenes I've ever seen, and the music and editing are also fantastic. The pacing is spot-on, surpassing a lot of big-budget films. I especially want to shout out the lead actor's smarts and abilities. Most male leads in other movies and shows are either too perfect or just not too bright, so it's been forever since I've seen a lead as cool as this one. This movie gets a perfect score from me!

It's kinda reminiscent of “Léon”. The cinematography is really well-done, and the action scenes are intense. But, there are some noticeable drawbacks—the story feels cliché, and the hero's whole deal of taking down the bad guys and sticking to his own code is kind of formulaic. The vibe is cool, but there aren't enough action scenes. Plus, the main villain's death is just weird—he gets taken out by a nail gun, which is pretty out there.

A strong life requires no explanation. “A History of Violence ” plus "Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai.”
