It's incredible how watching "The Elite Squad" (2007) many years later provides us with a completely different perspective than when it was first released. That's certainly how it felt for me. I used to think of it as just a movie to showcase how tough the police at Favela is, but watching it today, I realized how profound the message it delivers is. The whole story is incredibly smart and thought-provoking, and the powerful performances have stayed with me since its release. It's a gritty, yet realistic and essential film.

Watching this movie is like watching a military action movie, a Navy Seals training documentary, an anti-drug PSA (the good kind), and a revenge thriller all at once, and it's all incredibly awesome. On top of that, there are some incredible character works here as you really believe what these characters transform into by the end of the movie, and it is NOT a pleasant sight, let me tell you that. It's basically a better David Ayer movie.

Incredible film. What makes a cop corrupt? What makes honest cops resort to violence? Does fighting violence with violence work? These are some of the themes this movie explores. You're not spoon-fed any answers but given the opportunity to form your own opinion. If you watch this and think you're being told what is right and wrong, then you're missing the point.

This movie, like other mainstream Brazilian crime films, vividly depicts poverty and violence with intense visuals. Additionally, the confession of Roberto Nascimento, a BOPE captain, unveils his relentless quest for revenge against drug dealers, all while grooming Matias as his successor. As a result, the most striking aspect of this film is its portrayal of the chaos and upheaval caused by the system, all from a different perspective.

Handheld shots, overly-sharpened images, improper exposures, medium and close-up shots – these common elements combined with alot of chatty inner monologues create interesting effects. Plus, the film's approach to fighting fire with fire, coupled with the mockery of the middle class, makes it stand out even more. The story of the slums is just a cover; Matthias' personal transformation is where the movie is at, as evidenced by the scene where he shoots Baiano in the face.

The film really replicates reality with its rugged visuals and clever use of exposure. The yellow and blue lighting reminds me of the Brazilian flag. According to a friend who has spent time in Brazil, this movie is seen as a national film there. It seems to mirror the social issues in Brazil: crime amongst the lower class and apathy in the middle class. However, the excessive use of voice-over narration makes the characters feel a bit shallow, and the visuals lack dynamism, so I'd give it a 7 out of 10.

A história é inteligente e instigante, e as atuações poderosas seguem comigo desde o lançamento.
