Top Gun: Maverick (2022)★ 8.5/10

Tom Cruise delivers one of his best films here, with some very unusual events, and as a sequel that is far superior to its predecessor.

This sequel lives up to its hype. In an era dominated by modern filmmaking styles, it's refreshing to see a film rooted in old-school storytelling. The protagonist, now weathered by three long decades, remains the fearless youth he once was. With its themes of chasing dreams and self-reconciliation, "Top Gun: Maverick" serves as a nostalgic, historically significant gift to those who grew up in the '70s and '80s, rekindling the excitement of 1986.

The plot is incredibly formulaic, and the opening bar scene exudes an toxic masculinity that was off-putting. That said, the combat strategies are explained with remarkable clarity, especially compared to the confusing finale of "Tenet." This simplicity made the film enjoyable, with tension and thrills maintained throughout.

Directed by Tony Scott, the original "Top Gun" was a Reagan-era recruitment tool that significantly boosted pilot enlistments. Calls for a sequel never ceased. Tom Cruise continues to push his limits on screen as a Hollywood megastar, as seen in this film.

As a sequel to the 1986 film, "Top Gun: Maverick" retains the core idea of its predecessor - that Maverick remains a rebellious pilot with a passion for flying and adventure. In an era of advancing drone technology, veteran pilots face obsolescence. Facing the challenge of the times, Maverick, through his exceptional skills and unwavering belief, joins his late partner’s son on a mission to attack a military facility in a hostile nation, proving that human ingenuity and courage are irreplaceable at the crux of the moment.

The plot follows a conventional trajectory, and the initial bar scene, saturated with toxic masculinity, feels discomforting. Nevertheless, the fight scenes are remarkably clear, making it easy to follow. Watching the film feels akin to riding a roller coaster for an hour, intense and exhilarating. One can't help but crave to catch a glimpse behind the scenes to witness its creation.

The film employs a tried-and-true approach, yet the story that spans across 35 years still remains captivating. Whether capturing the youthful exuberance of yesteryears or present aspirations, the film navigates the reconciliation and succession between generations, alongside its clichéd yet effective romantic interludes. While one may nitpick its flaws, it undeniably holds viewers spellbound, exuding the classic Hollywood vibe throughout. Its emotive yet restrained execution firmly establishes it as one of the finest American mainstream films in recent years.

A high-flying adrenaline rush that combines heart-pounding aerial stunts with Tom Cruise's charismatic return. The soundtrack perfectly complements this exhilarating cinematic experience.

The movie is a standard Hollywood three-stage structure one, it is also a standard American military conscription propaganda movie. This is just an assembly line product created by a standard developed film industry, but the movie turned out to be the best in theaters in 2022!?

It is a movie that belongs to the 90s shot with the technology of 2022. It is a Standard U.S. military recruitment film.
