Whiplash (2014)★ 8.4/10

It wrecked me, but I was not alone. I watched it with a good friend who happened to be a talented amateur musician, and we had a strong disagreement over whether or not a teacher would behave like this when approaching an important show that would be held at the end of the school year. Maybe I have seen and heard too much, but I understood the motivations of Mr. Fletcher (a well-deserved award-winning performance by J.K. Simmons) and his highly-abused protégé, Andrew (Miles Teller, who also deserved a nod during the awards season). Maybe the structure was predictable, but it is still a film that deserves a second look, my and your respect, and several high notes of praise.
It is my tempo.

이미 이 영화가 유명하고 좋은 작품이라는 사실은 예전부터 알고 있었다. 데이먼 셔젤을 좋아하고 그의 작품들을 애정하며, 여러 번 추천을 받아왔었던 영화이지만, 솔직하게 말하자면 언젠가를 위해 아껴두고 있었다. 내가 무엇은 하는 사람이며 무엇은 향해 달리고 있는가에 대한 불안이 생기는 순간을 위해서 라면 말이 되려나.

영화를 보는 내내 매순간이 불안했고, 앤드류의 행동이 어디로 튈지, 플레쳐가 또 어떤 매서운 말을 꺼낼지 예상이 가지 않았다. 그럼에도 각각의 캐릭터에 대한 믿음과 그 순간들이 자아내는 불꽃같은 열정이 너무 아름답고 가슴이 벅차 끝까지 두손을 꼭 잡고 보게 되었던 것 같다. 시퀀스마다 다른 많은 생각들이 오고 갔고, 어떤한 장면은 이해가 안되거나 과하게 몰입이 되기도 했다.

전체적인 스토리가 너무 갑작스레 쉽게 시작되었다고 생각이 들 때쯤 아직 시작이 아니었다는 것을 느꼈고, 사건이 발생하고 그 고난과 역경을 앤드류가 연습으로 이겨낼때 마다 희열을 함께 느꼈다.

영화의 중간 지점 즈음, 앤드류의 노력에 대한 결과가 꼬이기 시작했다. 버스 타이어가 터지고, 택시를 못잡고, 드럼 스틱을 잃어버리고, 플레쳐가 앤드류를 윽박지르고, 결정적으로 큰 교통사고가 난다. 연이어 사건이 터지며 불행은 불행을 가져온다는 변치 않는 악연이 앤드류의 노력과 그에 따르던 결과를 온전하게 가로 막는다. 어떻게든 달려 무대에는 올랐지만, 사고로 인해 떨리는 손은 드럼 스틱을 놓치고 앤드류는 결국 연주를 진행할 수 없는 지경까지 다다른다. 그에 따른 플레쳐의 대답은, 퇴출.

감히 내가 예상을 했던 스토리는 플레쳐가 앤드류의 노력과 정신력에 감동은 아니더라도, 최소한 그의 열정은 알아줄거라 생각했다. 그러나 그가 앤드류의 끝을 외쳤을때 나는, 현실을 받아들였다.

내가 그렇게나 운운하는 현실, 그리고 그 상황에서의 옳은 결정이란 무엇인가. 열정과 노력이 아무리 가상해도 문제가 된다면 그건 받아들여질 수 없다는 현실이다. 세상에는 열정이 없다면 이뤄질 수 없는 일들이 너무나도 많지만, 그렇다고 열정만으로 이뤄질 수 있는 일도 절대 없다. 운이 따라야하고 주변 상황도 맞아야 하며, 결과에는 승복할 줄 알아야한다.

학교 밴드에서의 퇴출 이후 앤드류는 사고로 다친 몸과 마음을 치료하며 잠시 드럼을 손에서 놓는다. 창고 문뒤에 놓여져 있던 드럼과 스틱을 통해 알 수 있었다. 그러나 나는 앤드류가 절대 드럼을 포기했을 거라고는 생각하지 않았고, 그렇지 않길 바랬다.
그렇게 그럭저럭 살아만 있는 삶을 살던 그는 어느 한 라이브 재즈바에서 플레쳐를 다시 마주하고, 또다른 기회가 그를 찾아온다. 영화가 20분 남짓 남았던 시기기에 나는 앤드류가 이번에는 완벽한 연주를 선보이며 이렇게 그의 드럼 연주가로써의 인생이 잘 풀리나 생각했다. 그러나 플레쳐는 연주가 시작하는 그 순간까지 그에게 악보를 주지 않았고, 앤드류는 연주가 시작되고 나서야 그 사실을 알아차린다.

원했던 원하지 않았던, 복수를 있는 복수와 그를 잇는 또다른 복수.
마음이 절대 편하지 않았다. 그러나 누구도 말릴 수 없을 만큼 연주에 미쳐 드럼을 두드리는 앤드류를 플레쳐는 받아들였고, 완벽에 가까운 밴드 연주를 선보이며 열린 결말로 영화는 끝이 난다.

매 컷마다 미세하게 바뀌는 배우들의 표정이 스토리를 끌고 갔고, 나또한 함께 끌려왔다. 역시나 데이먼 셔젤은 이 영화에서도 패닝 기법을 썼고, 모든 프레임과 미쟝센은 아름다웠다. 이 감독을 소개할 때 절대 빼먹어서는 안될 음악 또한 역시나 미치도록 내 심장을 뛰게 했다. 까먹고 살았지만, 내가 이전에 음악을 했었던 사람이라는 사실을 수면 위로 끌어올려 주었고, 나는 앤드류의 반의 반만큼이라도 열정이 있었던가를 의문짓게 되었다.

사실 나는 지금 내가 몸을 담고 있는 영화라는 세계에도, 내가 어떠한 열정과 목표를 가지고 있는지에 대한 의문이 많이 들고 확신이 잘 서질 않지만, 이 작품과 앤드류, 플레쳐 그리고 데이먼 셔젤을 통해 나를 돌아보고 더 생각하게 되었다고 자부할 수 있는 좋은 영화였다.

The editing is layered and sophisticated, despite a straightforward narrative. The dialogue is highly aggressive, with no subtleties or hidden meanings, driving straight to the point. The film’s sound nearly deafens you—this is not just a musical, it’s an action movie.

To achieve the greatness that history remembers, one might have to forsake a normal life. The character of the teacher is incredibly well-developed, appearing justified even after driving a student to the brink. The protagonist got real close to giving it all up, only to persistently pick up the drumsticks again, embodying the resilience of a true protagonist. Music requires some relaxation and love, sustained by the protagonist’s deep-seated passion for drumming and his desire to prove its worth to his father. The scene where he performs on stage, bloodied from an accident, is truly heartbreaking. For one's ideals, one can sacrifice everything.

The viewing experience is fantastic. I enjoyed the fast-paced narrative with its rhythmic edits from start to finish (especially its handling of music performances). It encapsulates the recklessness of youthful ambition and the complexities of life's puzzles. This film achieves what only a writer-director can accomplish. One viewer after the screening remarked that the film truly captures the essence and spirit of jazz drumming. Overall, it was phenomenal.

Many of my friends despise "Whiplash", but I love it, perhaps because I don't see it as a film about music. The despair depicting a person not destined for genius yet desperately striving for recognition,even by a tiny margin, is all too real. His pursuit is so painstaking,belligerent, and bordering on self-destruction that it emits a poignant absurdity, making him super relatable. Watching this film left mesaddened yet exhilarated.

The pacing in this film is simply superb, seamlessly merging jazz music with editing. J.K. Simmons delivers venomous lines like a machine gun, his profanity punctuating the lines as intensely and rapidly as the drumbeats. The cinematography used to film the pivotal drumming scenes is fragmented and quirky, yet the editing infuses the overall narrative with a relentless, accelerating rhythm. It's a shame the film remains fragmented; otherwise, it would truly be a film in the style of David Fincher.

Explosive! I believe every musician or performer who has poured heart and soul into their craft will find profound resonance here. That blend of reverence and fear towards a strict mentor, yearning to absorb their energy yet being pushed to the brink of suffocation, striving for technical perfection only to discover the myriad surprises and fears beyond mere notes... The film, akin to its jazz soundtrack, is an adrenaline-fueled labor of love: imperfect yet irreplaceable.

There is a thing about films portraying obsessed artists that involves so much pain and degradation. In my perspective, the good thing to see in this movie is that it leaves for the viewer to have their own opinion about it. Not set in stone.

The watching experience is so great! The editing is crisp and has its own rhythm (especially the handling of music performances). There are desperate rough youth and complex life. It can only be achieved by the same screenwriter and director. After the screening, the audience said that the film captured the spirit of drums in jazz music phenomenally.

People who only see the pain in the story, but not joy, have probably never seriously pursued anything.
